Mental health support for adults in Sandwell: urgent help, talking therapies and recovery support
A local guide to urgent mental health help in Sandwell, NHS Talking Therapies, community recovery support and where to turn if someone may need a Mental Health Act assessment.

If you need mental health support in Sandwell, the right route depends on whether the need is urgent, ongoing, or connected to wider issues such as work, housing or staying safe at home. The local offer is spread across NHS services, council support and community organisations, so it helps to know which door to use first.

If you need urgent help now

If there is an immediate risk to life or serious injury, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent mental health support across Sandwell and the wider Black Country, the local NHS route is NHS 111 and select option 2. Black Country Healthcare also publishes a text option on 07860 025 281 for urgent mental health support.

Sandwell Talking Therapies

For anxiety, stress, depression and similar common mental health problems, the main local NHS route is Sandwell Talking Therapies. The service is for people aged 16 and over who are registered with a Sandwell GP. Sandwell’s local directory says the service accepts self-referrals as well as GP referrals.

Local descriptions of the service list Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), counselling, EMDR, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, digital options and some specialist support such as maternal wellbeing and culturally specific counselling routes.

Work and mental health

If work is part of the problem, Sandwell residents who are waiting for or already using NHS Talking Therapies can also access local Employment Advisors through the same system. The published Sandwell contact is 07570 722126 and bchft.sandwellemploymentadvisorstalkingtherapy@nhs.net.

Support to stay well at home

Some residents need practical recovery support alongside therapy. Sandwell’s Floating Support Service helps adults who are finding it difficult to stay safe and healthy, may be at risk of homelessness, are finding it hard to stay out of hospital or are at risk of harm. The service includes help with mental health, budgeting, benefits, safety and housing stability.

The borough also lists the Sandwell Outreach Recovery Team (SORT), a community support service for adults aged 18 to 65 living in Sandwell who have experienced mental ill health and can live independently with the right support.

If someone may need a Mental Health Act assessment

Sandwell Council publishes a specific route for formal Mental Health Act assessment referrals. Concerns can be raised through Sandwell Enquiry on 0121 569 2266 or sandwell_enquiry@sandwell.gov.uk. Out of hours, the published number is 0121 569 6817. The council is clear that if there is immediate risk of significant harm you should call 999 rather than trying to arrange an assessment yourself.
