If money is tight in Sandwell, there are several local routes that can help depending on what has gone wrong. Some support is for an immediate crisis, such as food or pre-payment energy, while other help is about making income go further, checking benefit entitlement, reducing housing pressure, or finding local advice and community support.
Who this page is for
This page is for Sandwell residents who are struggling with food, fuel, travel costs, basic household items, rent shortfalls or general hardship.
It is also useful for carers, social prescribers, family members and front-line workers who need to signpost somebody to the right local route quickly.
Emergency help through Local Welfare Provision
Sandwell’s Local Welfare Provision Scheme (LWP) is the main council route for short-term crisis support. It can provide emergency financial help, food vouchers, and help with furniture or white goods for people in a crisis or for people leaving supported living who need essential items.
- You must usually be 18 or over and live in Sandwell
- You must usually have savings below £1,000
- You must usually be receiving a qualifying benefit such as Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA, Pension Credit (guarantee), Universal Credit with no earnings deductions, or Council Tax Reduction
- Applications are made through MySandwell
- The service is available Monday to Friday
The council says LWP can help with food vouchers, PayPoint vouchers for pre-payment gas or electricity, short-term travel within the West Midlands, and some essential household items such as beds, fridges or cookers. The page says decisions are aimed to be made as soon as possible and can take up to 14 days, although many are quicker.
What to do if your problem is rent or bills rather than food or fuel
If the crisis is mainly about rent, the better route may be Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP). This is for residents who already get Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit but still cannot meet the shortfall in their rent.
DHP can sometimes help with deposits, moving costs, or a shortfall caused by a non-dependent deduction. Sandwell says DHP claims are normally processed within 6 weeks once all information is received.
If you are not sure what you should be claiming, use the benefits routes as well. A benefit check often unlocks longer-term help that is more effective than repeat crisis applications.
Where to get broader support in Sandwell
Supporting Sandwell is the council’s wider information hub for cost of living support. It brings together help with food, energy, money advice, welcoming spaces, benefit checks and local advice sessions.
The council’s Benefits pages also link to the benefits calculator, Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit, DHP and other routes that can stabilise your finances over a longer period.
If you need more complex help with income, overpayments, appeals or disability-related benefits, contact the Welfare Rights Team.
